Echimyidae (from Ancient Greek ἐχῖνος (ekhînos), meaning "hedgehog", and μῦς (mûs), meaning "rat, mouse") is the family of Neotropical spiny rats and their fossil relatives. This is the most species-rich family of hystricognath rodents.
