Wildebeest (, WIL-di-beest; , VIL-,), also called gnu (, NOO or , NEW), are antelopes of the genus Connochaetes and native to Eastern and Southern Africa. They belong to the family Bovidae, which includes true antelopes, cattle, goats, sheep, and other even-toed horned ungulates.
