What Wikipedia says
In church history, the term acephali (from Koine Greek: ἀκέφαλοι aképhaloi, 'headless', singular ἀκέφαλος aképhalos from ἀ- a-, 'without', and κεφαλή kephalé, 'head') has been applied to several sects that supposedly had no leader.
