Than Shwe (Burmese: သန်းရွှေ; pronounced [θáɰ̃ ʃwè]; born 2 February 1933) is a retired Burmese military officer who ruled Myanmar as the second chairman of the State Law and Order Restoration Council, later as the only chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, as well as the commander-in-chief of Defence Services from 1992 until his resignation in 2011, and concurrently served as the eighth prime minister of Myanmar from 1992 to 2003.
