What Wikipedia says
In Greek mythology, Pontus (Ancient Greek: Πόντος, lit. 'Sea') is the personification of the sea. In Hesiod's Theogony (8th or 7th century BC), he is the offspring of Gaia (the Earth), who produces him alone.
